Dr. Gravitte – Mt Airy, NC – 4/27/19
Visiting the dentist is not a favorite activity for most people, especially if pulling teeth is involved, but at least that and other services will be provided for free next Saturday in Mount Airy.
That’s when Dr. John L. Gravitte is scheduled to host Dentistry from the Heart. It is a fifth-annual charitable event in which Gravitte and his staff will team with other dental professionals and community members to offer care to both adults and children in need.
Registration begins Saturday at 7:30 a.m. for the volunteer-driven service at Gravitte’s office on North Pointe Boulevard off U.S. 52-North, which in the past has drawn legions of patients from near and far. Adults are being advised to arrive early for the free dental clinic that will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
“We’ve had hundreds of cars lined up for this event, and many arrive the day prior trying to secure their place in line,” explained Darla Hodges, a longtime employee of Dr. Gravitte’s who volunteers every year.
In 2018, those treated reported sleeping in their cars and camping out in vans overnight in the roadway leading to the facility.
“Last year we served 114 patients and hope to provide care to even more patients in need this year with the help of additional doctors and volunteers,” Marketing Director Amanda Fretwell of the dental office pointed out Thursday.
Treatment details
Participants will receive a dental exam, including oral cancer screening, and their choice of a filling, extraction or hygiene cleaning, according to information from Fretwell.
It also includes guidance for persons seeking care:
• Those who are pregnant or have cancer, heart problems, a joint replacement or a serious medical condition must provide a signed clearance form from their doctors to be eligible for any service.
• Advance reservations are not available, as patients receive care based on their number in line and service provided.
• As a safety precaution, patients will not be permitted on office property before 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Persons wishing to wait off-site in advance must abide by North Pointe Business Plaza and city of Mount Airy regulations. The Mount Airy Police Department will be on hand to assist with traffic control.
• Participants should avoid blocking the entrance or exit of any business.
• Since patients could be waiting outside for a portion of the day, they are advised to be prepared with water or snacks and bring sunscreen and a light jacket.
• Volunteers will be available to assist with completing registration forms along with a translator for Spanish-speaking individuals.
The success of the Dentistry from the Heart event is attributed to the commitment of many volunteers, especially those assisting with the registration and pre-screening process. Services and supplies from local businesses and individuals also are greatly appreciated, organizers say.
Dr. Gravitte’s ‘favorite day’
Gravitte, whose dental practice recently celebrated its 15th anniversary, began hosting the local version of the worldwide non-profit Dentistry from the Heart program after opening a spacious office on North Pointe Boulevard about five years ago.
“We began this event in our new facility that allows us to provide care for more patients and meet their dental needs in one location,” he said in a statement.
“But I didn’t expect the experience to be so rewarding,” added Gravitte, who was born and raised in Mount Airy and looks forward to the annual event. “It’s now my favorite day of the year.”
Dental professionals from across the state also are expected to volunteer their services Saturday.
The Dentistry from the Heart organization, based in New Port Richey, Florida, was launched in 2001 to provide free services on an international basis.
It has grown to include more than 200 annual events at which 80,000-plus people receive dental care at no charge through providers such as Dr. Gravitte.

Shenandoah Family Dentistry Event – Winchester, VA – 4/12/19
WINCHESTER — When people struggle to pay for basic necessities, dental care becomes a luxury they cannot afford.
Shenandoah Family Dentistry in Winchester is giving those people something to smile about with a day of free cleanings, fillings and extractions.
The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the practice in suite 102 at 1705 Amherst St. It is being held in partnership with the national nonprofit organization Dentistry from the Heart.
“There are some offices that have been doing it for years, but this is our first time,” Shenandoah Family Dentistry Marketing Director Ashley Kittel said.
Patients will be allowed to choose one of three procedures — cleaning, filling or extraction — and the first 50 people who arrive are guaranteed to be seen.
“We’re hoping to exceed that [number during the eight-hour event],” Kittel said.
People seeking treatment must be 18 years old or older and agree to a brief health exam. There are no income or residency requirements.
Patients who need fillings or extractions will be treated by one of Shenandoah Family Dentistry’s two dentists — Jared Pell and Blaine Travis Bohrer — or oral surgeon James Pell, who is Jared Pell’s father and has volunteered his services for the day.
Shenandoah Family Dentistry has been in Winchester for 18 years and moved to its current location on Amherst Street five years ago to accommodate an increasing number of patients.
“We’ve been very blessed, very fortunate as a practice to continue to grow,” Jared Pell said. “We feel it is time to give back to the community.”
The office is planning a second dentistry event this fall in association with Smiles for Freedom, a nonprofit organization that arranges free dental services for veterans and members of the military.
“There are a lot of people out there who can’t afford dental care because it’s very expensive, so we want to offer these days to help them out,” Jared Pell said.
In the event a participant in this Friday’s Dentistry from the Heart event needs follow-up care, Jared Pell said, “We’re not going to leave anyone stranded. If they’re having discomfort from a procedure that’s done, we’ll be happy to get them in and take care of that, free of charge.”
Shenandoah Family Dentistry has been preparing for its first Dentistry from the Heart event for nearly a year, and Jared Pell said he’s grateful that it’s finally going to happen.
“We’re happy,” he said. “We’re excited.”

Taylor Dental – Pensacola, FL – 4/12/19
PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — The annual Dentistry of The Heart is back for its second year, allowing people who can not afford dental care to take advantage of free services.
Taylor Dental is hosting the event, officials say they will serve everyone on a first come, first served basis.
Dr. Andrew Taylor says it’s hard for a lot of people in the community to afford dental care, so he closed his office to his normal patients for the day.
Nicole Pecararo lined up early this morning to get one of her teeth pulled.
“This tooth has been bad for a while and I’ve been waiting for awhile to get it done,” Pecararo said. “I’d still be in pain if it wasn’t for this.”
Dentristry of The Heart event goes from 7am to 2pm. Dr. Taylor says he would like to have the event again this time next year and serve even more people.

Family & Cosmetic Dental Care – Suwanee, GA – 5/4/2019
Has it been too long since your last teeth cleaning? Do you have an aching tooth and suspect a cavity? Avoiding the dentist when you have a tight budget or don’t have dental insurance is understandable, but this choice will ultimately cost you your oral health. Now you have an opportunity to get the dental care you need – attend Dentistry from the Heart (DFTH), the annual event offered by your Suwanee dentist that provides free dental work for a day.
Service with a Smile: Free Dental Work in Suwanee
Dr. Mitul Patel, Dr. Davis Smith, and the friendly staff at Family & Cosmetic Dental Care will host the fifth annual Dentistry from the Heart event in Suwanee on Saturday, May 4, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The first 50 patients – or as many patients as can be seen by 2 p.m. – will be offered a tooth-colored filling, teeth cleaning, or extraction.
Residents of Suwanee, Johns Creek, Duluth, Alpharetta, and the surrounding communities who are age 18 and older will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. The first 50 patients are guaranteed to be seen. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., rain or shine. Arrive early, dress appropriately, and be ready to revive your oral health.
Sometimes, all you need to get back on track is a little support. Dentistry from the Heart makes that possible by offering the following procedures:
- Dental cleanings: Regular teeth cleanings include the removal of plaque and tartar, a careful brushing and flossing, an oral cancer screening, and a dental exam. Getting a cleaning at DFTH not only resets your oral health, it is a chance to get a diagnosis about what else may be happening with your teeth and gums.
- Tooth-colored filling: The healthiest fillings you can have for your teeth are tooth-colored fillings. These natural-colored fillings blend with your tooth enamel. No one will ever know that you had a cavity. If you are experiencing tooth pain, now is the time to find out what’s going on.
- Tooth extraction: Pulling a tooth is a multi-layered process that must be carefully done to ensure that the tooth roots are gone and the area is properly cleaned. A tooth extraction is often necessary after an accident, mouth trauma, or when a tooth is badly infected from an abscess or gum disease.
